Stars are complexly connected the the souls of living things on Kona.
Some religions see the cosmos as an orchestra - the cycle of reincarnation is playing another note in the melody of the cosmos. Please note when reading that none of the below is 100% predictable.
Spoilers
This Cycle of Souls is not perfect, and some things are lost in the process of death, filter, and rebirth. Souls are made up of a collection of metaphysical particles that are collected by the experiences of the ensouled being. When a Soul collides with a Moon, it is a messy process. Many things are lost, some things are gained, and some souls may combine or interact in different ways if they have died at or around the same time and place (below the same moon).
The Cycle of Souls
Kona recycles souls in an endless song of reincarnation. When an ensouled being dies, its soul ascends to the stars, where it gravitates to the nearest Moon. When the soul strikes the moon, a number of things happen - the memories are wiped, and stored within the Moon. The Moon deposits something of itself onto the Soul, and the Soul returns to Kona, tabula rasa.
Ghosts
There are a number of ways that Ghosts can form on Kona:
- Sometimes the soul recycle system glitches out and a soul is left behind on Kona
- Necromancy moon causes souls to bounce back to Kona. Lead? It's very visible, and when the moon passes overhead you try very hard not to die
Pure Deaths
Possible to miss a moon when you die, and it becomes a “pure death”. This causes a slow loss of souls. Nuns of The Pure Lightplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigThe Pure Light is a cultic, women-only faith whose core is 500 ascetics led by High Priestess Mara which began originally among The Kavisi. It is a belief system that revolves around a belief in 'Rejoining'.

Ways souls are restored
Fresh Souls
The sun flares, adding more fresh souls to the world. When this happens, some cultures will hold festivals. The resulting aurora are called The Dance of Souls.

Soul Splitting: Some souls get split and become two souls during the reincarnation process. This can also cause these two new souls to interact specially when returned to Kona. Some may form string bonds immediately upon meeting each other. These can be platonic or romantic. This is where the concept of Soulmates comes from. On the other end of the spectrum, these souls can represent aspects of this individual that were in conflict. This results in Nemeses. Also, Alien Souls: Sometimes a soul from a different star arrives. These can result in exceedingly strange or unusual individuals, such as Zook Mazek.
Soul Magic
People have learned how to harness souls in many different ways.
- Arcanists have managed to store some ghost image of the souls of long-deceased and wield them in combat.
- Chimerists gather their power from the souls of the monsters and beasts they encounter.
- Darkblades are somber and powerful warriors who hide a sorrowful past. Due to tragic experiences on the battlefield or in personal life, their souls have developed an affinity for pain and shadow energy.
- Elementalists have learned to channel the souls that flow within the basic elements of creation: Air, Earth, Fire and Water.
- Entropists claim to not work with souls, but with The Void Beyond. Whether what they claim is true is hard to say.
- Spiritists have developed a powerful connection with the raw aspects of soul: emotion, energy, life, and death.
